    The American Character I am part of the first generation in my family that was born in America. My parents journeyed from Dominican Republic to Lowell twenty-nine years ago and I learned why because of the trip my family and I took to their native home four years ago. The education system isn’t as great as it is in America, real jobs and careers are very difficult to find and maintain, and the law is corrupt and not enforced. My parents came to America because it’s known as the country of opportunity. People from all corners of the earth arrived on American soil to make something of themselves and their families, but who did they become? What is the American character? Bill Bryson learns the real meaning while he crisscrosses the country in search for the “perfect” town in his memoir The Lost Continent. Bryson learns that Americans eventually get everything they want, they don’t preserve their possessions, and that they live in the best country on earth. His discoveries of the American character During the beginning of Bryson’s journey, he drives through Pennsylvania where he visits his friend Lucia Herndon and her family. He sat in their house one evening admiring their easy wealth and comfort, and suddenly wanted what the Herndons had: a typical middle-class American home. Bryson yearns for the “normal” components of an American home like a refrigerator that makes its own ice cubes, an electric orange juicer, toys everywhere in a child’s room, etc. He emphasizes that…
