Yuppification would be convenient given the plethora of schools in the valley including the prestigious Mount Holyoke College, Amherst College, and flagship campus for the University of Massachusetts system. If recent graduates found incentive to stay close to where they went to school and build connections within the valley, Holyoke could very well increase its’ population of millenials. There are already avant-garde art museums in dilapidated warehouses, apartments that resemble the dorms of Mount Holyoke, and beautiful parks near the canals. The only issue is that there are few housing and economic options, so the government needs to intervene. If the government deemed Holyoke a Landmark Site then tourism could be boosted and recent grads would have economic incentive to move there. Although there may be backlash to the idea of gentrification, in Holyoke and some other cities, the pros outweigh the cons. For example, services in…

There are various reasons as to why I’m deserving of the Etna-Dixmont School Scholarship. The most prevalent reason is my family history and connection with the town of Dixmont. My father and my grandparents moved to from Massachusetts to Dixmont, Maine when he was in second grade. My grandfather bought a house on Route 9 in Dixmont, and some other land in addition to that. The Dixmont Corner Church was built in 1835, and had an active one room school house next to it that was built in 1808. The…

Josiah Wedgwood. Young Charles was destined to make something of himself the day he was born. In 1818, young Charles began school at Shrewsbury. His scholastic achievments were very minor and at the concern of his father he was removed. His father stated, "You care for nothing but shooting dogs and rat catching, and you will be a disgrace to yourself and your whole family." Robert Darwin enrolled his son in Edinburgh to study medicine. Young Darwin did not like the subject and could…

Poem is a piece of writing which express feelings, emotions and ideas using descriptive figurative languages. However, poems are not dependable as a secondary source and if it is written about 100 years later than when the event actually happened. Likewise, the poem cannot be trustworthy if it contains different facts from the primary source written by the person who experienced that moment and who was actually there. Furthermore, as poems use figurative languages that exaggerate things, it is…

College is an obstacle to overcome, due to the fact that is hard enough to get into a ‘good’ school and even harder to stay in it. Therefore, due to a nearly cosmic fate other hurdles will need to be cleared before a student graduates with an undergraduate degree; and for some students that isn’t even the half of it when thinking about graduate school. This situation is achieved after dealing with monetary worries, grades, and trying to keep a perfect balance of friends, family, and crying in a…

“Good morning, please rise for the Pledge of Allegiance and our morning prayer,” the words that echoed through my quaint little grade school every morning- ones that I will not soon forget. From age four to age fourteen, my school day invariably began with these words. From my childhood years up to my early teenage years, I attended Holy Family School, a remarkably small, close-knit private school which seemed appropriate for the town of 4,000 people that it was situated in. The ten years I…
