    Sauropod Neck Structure

temperatures of sauropods contributed to the amounts and types of foods required for energy. It is supposed that the long necks and size of these dinosaurs allowed for eating copious amounts of highly fibrous plant-life during a single feeding (Barrett, Pm 2014). Similar to a previously mentioned article, these scientists examined the ligament system found in the neck of the Rhea Americana (a large, flightless bird found in South America – alike in appearance and structure to the common ostrich). The Rhea Americana contains an extended ligament which is attached to the neural spines at the cervical point. Using both Apatosaurus and Camarasaurus as their target subjects, they hypothesized a reconstruction of this same ligament structure along the spine, extending through the neck of these sauropods. They concluded that at least for Apatosaurus and Camarasaurus, the force of tension caused by this ligament structure would have proved efficient for a sauropod when tilting its neck downward. These ligaments would have remained taught with the neck and head being extended forward in a lateral position, slightly sloping downwards (Tsuihiji, T. 2004). In this article, the scientists set out to examine the mechanical functionality of sauropod neck and tail postures, as well as their morphology. To do so, they looked at mammals and crocodiles alive today that have similar structures in their physiology and the varying loads that these parts of the animals are capable of sustaining…

The largest dinosaurs to walk the Earth may have embarked on seasonal migrations that covered hundreds of kilometres when local watering holes dried up and food became scarce. Evidence that giant sauropods set off on epic journeys came to light when scientists examined fossilised teeth recovered from the remains of beasts unearthed in Wyoming and Utah in the US. The analysis of 32 teeth belonging to two species of Camarasaurus, among the most common sauropods found in North America, suggests…
