    Abdomen Injury: Ruptured Gallbladder Definition of Injury The gallbladder is an organ that holds the excess bile produced by the liver. When the gallbladder ruptures, this excess bile leaks, caused by inflammation.(Krause, 2015) Anatomy of the Gallbladder The gallbladder is located underneath the liver Mechanism of Injury The two ways a gallbladder can rupture are from inflammation, or due to blunt injury. Causes of inflammation that lead to rupture are “Gallstones, ascariasis, bacterial infections, and biliary sludge” (Krause, 2015) the most common form of blunt injury gallbladder rupture is from motor vehicles accidents, and direct blows from contact sports. Signs and Symptoms If the gallbladder ruptures, a common sign is a short lived, acute, sharp pain, which may return after the rupture becomes inflamed (Krause, 2015) Benson 2 Treatment of a rupture gallbladder The most common treatment for the gallbladder is cholecystectomy, which is the remove of the organ, as the gallbladder is not vital. This is best done before the gallbladder ruptures, as there is less risk for complications. Basic Rehab (Silva, A.(2017, November 16) Interview) Diet Follow a low fat diet for three months Activity No vigorous activity for first 24-48 hours. No lifting over 10-15 pounds for 6 weeks Return to work when when comfortable to do so, most often patients return 7-10 days after surgery.
