In the 1960’s there where many movements that started to be heard around the U.S. Most notably the African American civil rights movement. This movement sparked a lot of other groups to fight for their equality and rights now more than ever. One of which was the Latino movement also known as the Chicano movement which had been around since the early 1900’s but it was during the 60’s that they made their biggest impacts. These are the events that helped them progress in their fight for rights and equality. In 1962 the United Farm Workers Association was created by Cesar Chaves who was a civil rights activist during this time along with Dolores Huerta. It wasn’t until 1965 when the (UFWA) joined Filipinos in the Delano Grape Strike. A strike against grape growers who exploited their workers it lasted 5 years until finally they came up with an agreement which improved conditions in the field. The following year in 1966 the Cuban American Adjustment Act was passed for those immigrant refugees who had spent at least a year in America to obtain their U.S. residency. This was one of the biggest accomplishment for Latinos because this deal had never been made to anyone before. Even though the start of the 60’s was slowly starting to change the way Latino people were being treated in the work force the education system was still discriminating against the minority youth. In 1968 Latino students started walkouts to protest against the Los Angeles school district for unequal treatment.…

“Huelga! Huelga! Huelga!” grandma screamed alongside Cesar Chavez and hundreds of other protesters outside the Delano, California vineyards. Kurt Vonnegut is a man who was never afraid to express his opinions, political or otherwise. In his essay, titled “A Truly Modern Hero”, Vonnegut argues that an obstetrician named Ignaz Semmelweis should be viewed and modeled as a hero. He begins his essay by stating his intentions in his paper--at least purportedly. Vonnegut goes on to expand in detail on each of his three major subjects: honor, “guessers”, and Semmelweis as a hero. Each of his points leads into the others, and the entire…

As far as american history and civil rights goes, the education system should not teach us that black and white racism was the only issue at the time. Growing up Chicano this issue and…

I waited with my cellphone in hand as one, two, three rings, and finally…“Hey Lily!” a familiar voice greeted, his tone friendly and confident as always. In the background, one could hear the quiet rumble of his car as he made his way from work, back home to his family. I couldn’t help but smile as I responded back.
