He worked as a carpenter and freelance writer. According to his friend, Bernie living situation was not ideal “I remember his running an extension cord down to the basement. He couldn’t pay his bills.” (Borg, 2015) Bernie was dedicated to his attempts at running for office. In 1977, and after many unsuccessful attempts to run for office he resigned from Liberty Union political party. Sanders thought he was done with politics, until one day his friend Richard Sugarman, showed him how well he performed with Liberty Union in the city of Burlington Vermont. In 1981 he became the mayor of the city of Burlington, and reelected three times. Sanders married Jane O’Meara in 1988. She had three children from a previous relationship. In 1990 Bernie was elected to become an independent congressman for the state of Vermont. He served as a congressman for 16 years before being elected in 2006 to become the U.S. Senator for the state of Vermont. Bernie Sanders policy proposals while at Congress and in the Senate have to do with helping working people and reducing the influence of the wealthy. His primary goal while at the Senate was to help rebuild the middleclass in the United States once more.
