fallible. ”Unlike the situation with motion sickness, here the neocortex overrules the reptile brain” (Burnett, 2016 p. 14) In other to illustrate neocortex over-ruling, the primitive brain, Burnett gives the example of eating disorders. For example in the case of bulimia, the neocortex overrules the reptile brain, thereby neglecting the individual’s basic need for food: “The brain manages to convince the body that body image is more important than food, so it doesn’t need food” (Burnett, 2016 p. 17). However, only a small percentage of individuals develop eating disorders, and author does not explain why only those few individuals develop bulimia. Research suggests that connection between serotonin and its receptors is increased in some brain areas in individuals with bulimia (Tiihonen et al., 2004). This showing that bulimia could be due to a chemical imbalance of serotonin in the brain. On the opposite end of the bulimia argument, the author also gives the example of the neocortex over-ruling, the primitive brain to obtain pleasurable sensation. This according to Monteleone et al. (2012), this is called hedonic hunger. The same way the neocortex overrules the primitive brain to possibly develp eating disorders by wanting that image, it can also seek pleasure sensation. This can be observed when Nucleus Accumbens is activated. This is the part of the neocortex that deals with pleasure. In other to show this the author, gives the example of “room for dessert”. By, the…
