Swing Kids is an American musical drama that was released March 5th, 1993. This Hollywood Pictures film was written by Jonathan Marc Feldman and directed by Thomas Carter, with stars such as Robert Sean Leonard, Christian Bale, and Frank Whaley. Swing Kids was produced by Mark Gordon and John Bard Manulis, and it was distributed by Buena Vista Pictures Distribution. This movie runs for approximately 112 minutes and it’s music is by James Horner, it’s soundtrack includes mostly swing music with songs such as “It Don’t Mean A Thing”. In 1939, pre World War II, swing music became the underground movement of the youth. A close group of friends listen to banned United States swing music, but eventually the dancing and singing lead to difficult choices by three boys as the Nazis began taking over Germany. Each member of the group, Peter, Arvid and Thomas, are forced to make difficult choices about right, wrong, and survival. The youth of Germany were pressed into joining the Hitler Youth called the “Hitlerjugend”, Peter and Thomas become Hitler Youth by day and Swing Kids by night, impacting their family and putting their friendship with Arvid to the test. Arvid refuses to play a German song, Peter is sympathetic, and Thomas begins to believe the ways of the Nazis. When regarding the historical accuracy of the film, I believe it did well, however, the portrayal of swing kids could have been more accurate. I chose to read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. I first heard of this book during freshman year in 20th Century. The teacher explained that it was about the conditions of the meat industry was back in the early 1900s.
