    Beyoncé: More Than an Entertainer Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter, known to the general public as Beyoncé, was born to Tina Knowles (mother) and Matthew Knowles (father) on September 4, 1981 in Houston, Texas. She is identified by her career in the music industry, but there is more than what meets the eye. Knowles is also an accomplished entrepreneur, or a person who owns, operates, and takes the risk of a business venture. In only thirty-two years, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter has accomplished so many things, from music to business, she has made history. To begin her journey into the business world, Knowles focused on her singing career. At the age of sixteen Beyoncé and members of her former group Girls Tyme, predecessor of Destiny’s Child, signed a recording deal with Columbia Records in 1997. Later the group’s named changed and they made their debut with their song “Killing Time”, which sold over a million copies. “Between 1997 and 2005-and after undergoing several member shifts-the group reigned as the world’s top-selling female vocal group, achieving combined sales of more than 60 million records” (Robinson). In 2003 Knowles embarked on her solo career, releasing her first album “Dangerously in Love”, which earned her five Grammy Awards. Beyoncé began moving into the acting field in 2001 with the film Carmen: A Hip Hopera, but her career in acting was not launched until she appeared alongside Mike Meyers in Austin Powers: Goldmember.
