The Black Muslim movement was started by Elijah Muhammad and aimed to promote Black equality and Nationalism. The movement looked to empower African Americans and help them to achieve political, economical, and social success. Whilst in jail, Malcolm devoted his life to the Nation of Islam and changed from his slave name of Malcolm Little to Malcolm ‘X.'
