    born on May 12, 1820. Florence is the daughter of a wealthy British couple. She has an older sister, Frances. Florence's Father was well educated and had inherited wealth from his uncle. Florence's mother enjoyed a relaxed, easy life and she also came from a very wealthy family. The family finally returned home from Italy when Florence was one-year-old. Starting at a young age, Florence kept written records of the flowers she observed. Later in her life, she would note that pets made great companions for people suffering from chronic illnesses. Florence’s father home-schooled both of his daughters to extremely high standards. They were taught French, German, Italian, Greek, Latin, Philosophy and Math. Later on in Florence’s life, Benjamin Jowett, Master of Oxford’s Balliol College, would seek her opinion of the Greek philosopher Plato. Her mother made sure that her girls had social skills of high-class girls. Florence was tired of social scenes, at just age 16 she believed God was calling her to service. “I craved for some regular occupation, for something worth doing instead of frittering away my time on useless trifles” Florence had written in her private diary. Between the ages of 17 and 19, her parents took Florence on another Grand Tour, further delaying the day she could follow her calling. By the time she was 19 she was opposed by her parents.
