Xerox was lagging behind its Japanese competitors so they implemented leadership through quality. Leadership through quality consisted of performances that include productivity and quality while at the same time, identifying the underlying practices or procedures that are driving performance. (Shah & Kleiner, 2011) Shah and Kleiner stated, “while quality is a relative term, business need sold standards that their products and services can meet to help them complete in the market place. Managing a proper strategy for benchmarking helps generate data that can be used to improve a company’s offerings.” (Shah & Kleiner, 2011) When viewing quality, the larger corporations such as Xerox measures three areas of quality assessments, monitoring, and external evaluation of quality. The process for improving quality entails applying a standard protocol to narrow the gap between current and expected deficiencies. The key to the modern benchmarking is to plan, find, collect, analyze and improve the company’s overall operation. For Xerox this five step process has made history for all corporations to follow. This is why large corporations are driven by benchmark it has proven in history and even today the best way to improve quality and service is benchmarking.
