Alfred Hitchcock’s famous films Psycho and The Birds both portray women in a uniquely comparable way as each of these two films centre around the journey of a woman. His famous 1960 film, Psycho, follows Marion Crane, a Phoenix secretary who stumbles across and seizes the opportunity to claim a large sum of cash to start a new life. His equally critiqued 1963 film, The Birds, focuses on wealthy business woman Melony Daniels, as she travels to the green retreat Bodega Bay in order to win over a…

Dissecting the sequence, Raymond Durgnat divides the sequence into six major narrative points: the intro, the peacefully sequence of Marion showering, the entering of the villain, the constant shot-reverse shot of the killer and Marion’s struggle, Marion dying, and Marion lies dead on the floor (Durgnat 128). Kendrick asserted that a total of six shots are from Marion’s viewpoint and a spiking sixteen are from the mother’s viewpoint (Kendrick 8). These all more than 70 shots were described in…

motif. To further explore this concept, this essay will consider Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. In this film, Hitchcock subjects Marion Crane to the voyeur through his placement of the owl in the parlor scene at the Bates Motel. When initially entering the parlor, Marion Crane’s surprise at the number of taxidermy birds mounted on the walls and placed on the tables is evident. The bird shown the most frequently in this scene is the owl. In the corner of the room facing Crane’s seat, the owl…

Marion’s fate at the Bates Motel. With Marion and her decision to steal the money Hitchcock begins to introduce us to characters who make some morally questionable decisions. For example, Marion is first introduced to us while in the middle of a sexual encounter with her boyfriend, while she is half naked, although a scene like this wouldn’t phase any modern day viewers, it was likely to be very controversial for its time. Almost immediately after we have the scenes of Marion running away and…

symbolises Marion’s life falling apart and coming undone. This is then cut to the shot of a mixture of water and blood going down the drain which could also symbolise Marion’s soul leaving her body or her entire life being “washed away”. The edit from the shower drain dissolves to the close-up shot of Marion’s eye is a form edit because the drain and her eye share a similar circular form. During all of these shots the editor has chosen to remain in what has just occurred by shots for a while…

clearly showing a message, and is almost foreshadowing what will happen soon. Another inference made would be when Norman mentions something about a “trap” that were all in (Wood 107). In the film, Norman says “were all in our own private traps” (Wood 107). As he is telling this to Marion he strokes a stuffed bird in his hands. One other thing that I have inferred is that Marion is from Phoenix, Arizona. This is another bird reference, but not in the way you would think it would be. A phoenix is…

director wanted to show that women at the time could do what men could do. That they weren't any different. I like the direction of the movie, it has a really good flow. At creepy parts it would speed up the film. At the climax it would slow it down so you can get every single detail. I think the cinematography of the movie was one of the best. First to start off with, I think that the movie became 10x’s more scarier because of the fact that we are getting pov’s of the characteris views. I think…
