Question: Analyze the theme of "right and wrong" in The Mason Wins the Prize "Right and wrong" changes over the course of the periods and is seen differently depending on the time setting and a person's point of view. The theme of "right and wrong" is demonstrated throughout the story, The Mason Wins the Prize. The story The Mason Wins the Prize is a Chinese folktale that tells the story of a young mason who falls in love with a magistrate's daughter. Since the mason isn't at the same class level as the magistrate he can't marry her but, does the impossible in order to make his dream of marrying her come true. His mother speaks to the magistrate and begs him to allow her son to marry her daughter. The magistrate agrees but he gives him 3 tasks that he think are "impossible". When the young mason completes all of these tasks. After that "the magistrate could no longer withhold his consent and gave him his daughter." (pg.4) In today's society that would be seen as wrong because it is not seen as "normal" to give a daughter away without her consent or her knowing. In ancient China, the time period it was written in, it was okay because people used to tend to do that in order, like it's shown in the story, to keep a promise. The story continues and the mason and his new wife are living happily. The mason loves his wife so dearly that he never leaves her side so he won't bear being without her.
