    The Real Slumdogs

    • 1935 Words

Social structure relates to “The Real Slumdogs” because, without the mega-slum that is Dharavi, other cities and countries would not be able to purchase goods nearly as cheap as what we have come to expect. In Dharavi, there is no minimum wage; there are no labor laws – or, at least, there seemed to be none according to the movie. In the movie, much like the migrant workers in “The Harvest,” families work long, strenuous days with little pay and, in order to make the very most they can, they even employ their children to do some digging around in the trash to find recyclable items. Once they find these recyclable items, they break them down, sanitize them, and give them to the people who can make something out of them, thus making very little profit. Although unfortunate, if it were not for these people, like previously mentioned, citizens of the surrounding city of Mumbai, citizens of the United States, and surely citizens of other well-developed cities and countries could not get the items we desire as cheap as we can now. Whether it be furniture, or even food, the people of Dharavi feed the system with their goods while they starve themselves and struggle to send their children to school or do the things they enjoy. However, because of them, we can go to IKEA and get that table we think would go nice with our living room aesthetic for a reasonable price – all because it is made out of recycled materials and constructed by workers who get paid next to nothing. And without…

Born and brought up in a traditional South Indian family, Adiga is a true Indian both in spirit and thought. Much has been said about Adiga as an outstanding and an unassailable story teller. If Mulkraj Anand is considered as a socially committed novelist, Adiga is often applauded as a painter of vivid Kittur, a microcosm of Indian social milieu. Adiga has published four short stories The Sultan’s Battery, Smack, Last Christmas in Bandra and The Elephant between 2008 and 2009, drawing upon…

In Adiga’s story “Last Christmas in Bandra,” similarly placed in the pre-liberalised India, the compassionate judge trusts the words of the poor criminals produced before him much more than the police version. Such compassion from a judge or a lowly quack is unheard of in the world of The White Tiger or Last Man in Tower. No character is capable of kindness and mercy in the liberalised world of Balram or in the commercial world of Mumbai, where even the virtuous Masterji is incapable of showing…

one and a full hour in Jaipur one. I loved the ride 'Mr. India' which was based on a popular Bollywood movie, Mr. India. We took a lot of pictures, had a lot of fun and set out to Mumbai at around 6:30 in the evening. Stuck in the traffic, we arrived at Mumbai at my relative's place at around 10:00 p.m. or probably even later. I slept all the way! The weather was, thankfully, good. It rained but softly.
