This concept refers to the theory that self-esteem is established by how an individual expects others to interpret success or failure events as opposed to the events themselves (Baldwin et al., 2004). This study found that individuals with lower self-esteem are more likely to relate failure with rejection by others, and as a result experience mores negative emotional reactions than their high self-esteem counterparts. This supports the results found in the current study that low self-esteem individuals will be in a worse mood than high self-esteem individuals after the difficult task condition, which serves as the failure event. The study conducted by Baldwin and colleagues (2004) also found that there was no significant contingency pattern when low and high self-esteem individuals were placed in the non-threatening condition. This result of the Baldwin and colleagues (2004) study provides support to the finding that there was no significant difference in mood between high and low self-esteem individuals after the easy anagram task, which serves as the non-threatening condition.
