Recently, I attended the grand opening Centro Latino at Emory. It was sponsored by the Latino Student Organization, in collaboration with the Alumni Association and SOL of Multicultural Emory. This event was certainly one of celebration as it marked a moment in history for Emory by having a special space Hispanic, Latin American and Latinx students on campus. Centro Latino, which is located on the second floor of the Dobbs University Center, West Wing, was festively decorated with flags of the countries that encompass the Latino community. The event’s program was led by a college senior, Bryan Natividad. It began with an introduction to Centro Latino by Dr. Suzanne Onorato, followed by an introduction of the Centro Latino advisory board and a ribbon cutting by staff, students and board members. The Centro Latino Advisory board is comprised of a group of students who were greatly involved in helping create this cultural space and whose role would be to plan future meeting and events in the space. After the ribbon cutting and other formalities were completed, Bryan Natividad invited everyone in attendance to enjoy the food, music and other festivities provided. This event certainly served the purpose of celebrating as well as welcoming the Emory community into this new space dedicated to supporting the Latino community. It was very apparent that this space was a long time in the making and that students, like my resident Camila Donoso, have worked hard to see it come to…

For my FOA I’ve decided to pick the most iconic movie speech of all time from the final installment of the Rocky franchise released in 2006. The learning outcome I wish to achieve from my FOA is to demonstrate an awareness of how language and meaning are shaped by culture and context. Rocky Balboa (starring Sylvester Stallone), the 6th and final installment of the “Rocky” franchise, is the story of a retired boxing champion who surprisingly comes out of his retirement to face one…

her tells her how Adonis had been in a fight again and Mary Anne does not seem the least surprised that he is always fighting. One example that goes against masculinity is the fact that Adonis forgives his father because he realizes that he did not leave him on purpose. In the article “Creed” And The Fight For Black Masculinity In Hollywood” it states; “Even though he’s spent his life fighting in his father’s shadow (in more ways than on), Mary Anne’s efforts are what led Donnie toward…

the environmental sounds such as his footsteps become less noticeable and the music becomes louder, which is exactly what would happen realistically. Sound is a really important technique used throughout Creed’s trainings and is seen very clearly in his last training before the big fight. Creed is obviously training his very hardest at this point and has the support of many while he runs through the streets back to Balboa at the hospital. As he runs there are two different sources of sounds…

Gentle Rocky (1976) is the embodiment of the classic underdog story, which has been a beloved trope since Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. What makes it an instant classic, however, is the underdog himself- Rocky Balboa, the quintessential everyman with a heart of gold. He, as every underdog is, is highly relatable, but beyond that he particularly resonates with me because even though the story is about him achieving his goal, defeating Apollo Creed in a bloody one on one boxing match,…

The film Rocky IV, revealed the thoughts and ideas of many in the Western culture. The United States vs. the Soviet Union captured the cold war inside of a boxing ring. Blue-collared workers may find the film endearing, due to the film’s ability to highlight and illustrate the cultural beliefs and values that are instilled in Americans, which is the idea that everyone has the opportunity to succeed in this country. Leab calls this the “working class perspective” (270). As for race, Leab suggests that Rocky plays off of “old prejudices and fears” (270), but how can a…

Rocky Balboa is my hero and a roll model for me. Today I had the pleasure of spending my whole day with my icon, in the city of “Brotherly Love”. We met up early in the morning at his gym for our morning workout. After we finished the workout we went out to lunch at Pat’s Dinner, where I asked him questions about his teenager days. The last thing that Rocky and I did on our day was that he took me through the city and showed me many of the places of the city that meant the most to him. I…
