Avian incubation

One of the most observed birds on campus are crows, whether they’re calling from the trees or stealing food from trash cans, they seem to be ever present. This is funny considering that they seemed to elude me every time I took the time to observe them. For as much as I couldn’t find them, I did make some very interesting observations that led me to my own conclusions about why they behave the way they do, and when they do it. As far as what crows look like, they’re fairly large birds- larger than a robin- and completely black. Their feathers are sleek and shiny, particularly those of the wings and tail, and when they fly, they use a combination of flapping their wings and gliding. In observing a pair which I came to believe were mates, I could not tell which crow was the male and which the female for their colorings were identical and there was no significant difference in their size. While they appeared to be rather austere birds in flight, and even when they were perched high in trees, I did watch one crow slip multiple times on rocks as it was walking across them, which shattered whatever grim conceptions I previously had of the birds. I had some luck in observing a family of crows after discovering a crow nest high in a tree near the Galileo building. While no sightings of the baby, or babies, occurred, their harsh cries were unmistakable.
