The best part of watching your childhood dreams be crushed before your very eyes, is knowing that there are thousands of other people experiencing the exact same thing, at the exact same moment. There’s something comforting in the unity that lurks behind the pain of having your favorite television show be so thoroughly disrespected, as was the fate of Avatar: The Last Airbender. I went to see the movie less than a week after it’s opening in 2010, and left less than an hour into the movie. When…

Martial arts have always had a positive impression on me. I remember when I was five years old, I would watch “Avatar the last Airbender.” I was so inspired by watching this show, just watching the characters doing crazy flips in the air ; it was an extravagant sight. My parents who would see me trying to perform such flips and karate techniques, decided it would be right for me to start taking karate classes. One day after school I was taken to a dojo about ten minutes away from my house,…

Aang, the last of the Air Nomads, has the power to bend all four elements at his will, but must learn to master them while on the run from the Fire Nation. Aang mirrors the Hmong people, both in his running from the Fire Nation and how he is the future for his people, similar to how Yang is. Both must adapt to a new environment and learn quickly for the sake of others, and both look up to an elderly figure greatly, making it all the more heartbreaking when said figure ends up passing away. In…

A stereotypical female is usually pretty, thin, emotional, and often helpless, while males are more aggressive, strong, muscular, and seen as the protector. However, recently more children shows have started introducing stronger and more independent female characters that go against the stereotypical gender roles created by society. One show in particular, Avatar: The Last Airbender, does that…

The character is Joo Dee and her quote follows the original word for word except for the last half, instead of “walk into Mordor” its “pop in on the earth king” in referencing that the main characters desire to see the king. Also thrown in just for laughs is a picture of Sean from another scene in Lord of the Rings with the text “I love this show” placed under the picture of Joo Dee. The text is probably referencing the popularity of the show or making a comparison to the popularity of the Lord…

consideration towards Asian women has lead to an uproar among the Asian community leading to a few boycotts and protests. Hollywood writers and directors do have a social responsibility to avoid stereotyping ethnic characters because of their misrepresentation of minority cultures in television often leading to racial, painful, and dehumanizations of minority groups in media. Three topics I will be discussing are Hollywood’s prejudice towards females, yellow facing, and casting of Caucasian…

While more films include characters of colour in the background, most casts remain exclusionary. These films still show the cultural stereotypes that were implemented more than a century ago. Unless the film requires casting POC, the first person Hollywood seems to cast is 99% of the time white. In the last decade thousands of films have chosen not to cast actors of colour. Some films that did this include Aloha, Exodus: Gods and Kings, Prince of Persia, and Argo (Nahaar). A film that received…
