    A Good Hero In Beowulf

    • 1175 Words
    • 5 Pages

In the epic, Beowulf, by Seamus Heaney, the main character, Beowulf, is seen as a great hero to all. This is false. Beowulf is not a hero, he is just a glory driven warrior that does not care about others. He, as a king, should not risk his life to fight the dragon and leave his people to fend for themselves against the other societies looking for more power. If Beowulf is a true hero he would do what is best for his people, not what is best for his ego. Also as he takes his last breathes he is more occupied with having a borrow built in his honor instead of picking a successor or having a plan for his people so they can strive without him. A hero is someone who is selfless and always makes sacrifices for others’ benefit and Beowulf does not hold these characteristics, as you can clearly see when he goes to protect the Danes, when he goes after Grendel’s mother, and when he fights the dragon. These are all examples of Beowulf lacking in true heroism and obsessing over obtaining his glory status instead of helping others. In the beginning of the book Beowulf comes to the Danes acting like he is there to help the Danes break free from Grendel 's wrath with no benefits to himself, but that is not the case. Beowulf comes to the Danes to gain glory. He knows that defending an innocent village from a demon would make him look very good to others. In the book it is explained that “ No one tried to keep him from going, no elder denied him”(pg. 15). This just shows that Beowulf has…
