With the results from the subjects, researches chose nine single-nucleotide polymorphisms who has the highest prevalence of celiac disease from 11 non-HLA regions associated with this disease and 21 non-HLA regions associated with type 1 diabetes (Smyth et al. 2008). With these results, three celiac disease loci had a connection with type 1 diabetes: RGS1 on chromosome 1q31, IL18RAP on chromosome 2p12, and TACAP on chromosome 6p25 (Smyth et al. 2008). While two loci of type 1 diabetes were found on celiac loci: CCR5 and PTPN2 (Smyth et al. 2008). From the overall results of this experiment, researchers have concluded that these genes found on both disease loci can be classified as autoimmunity genes because of their prevalence in type 1 diabetes and celiac disease, thus a genetic connection between the two disorders (Smyth et al. 2008). In other studies, scientist concluded that type 1 diabetes related autoantibodies are exhibited in ¼ patients with celiac disease (Holmes 2008). Through many trials and research, the conclusion can be made that celiac disease and type 1 diabetes do have genetic similarities, however the question if one leads to the other is still up in the air. As well as both being auto immune disorders, they also share four alleles that researchers found comparing DNA in the trial mentioned earlier (Smyth et al. 2008).
