    Adaptation Of Stress

    behind doing well in school. Throughout the semester, I have tried three different relaxation techniques, yogic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation and autogenic training. Yogic breathing involves inhaling and exhaling air at a ratio of 1:4:2, inhaling air for 4 seconds, holding for 16 seconds and then exhaling the air for 8 seconds (Romas & Sharma, 2013, pp. 60). The ultimate goal is to obtain rhythmic breathing, which allows for deep concentration, relaxation and conserves energy (Romas & Sharma, 2013, pp. 60). Yogic breathing for me personally was unsuccessful, it was challenging to clear my mind enough for the relaxation technique to work properly. As soon as the breathing exercise was finished, the thought of my stressors came back. The next technique is progressive muscle relaxation. Progressive muscle relaxation involves laying down in a quiet area and listening to an audio file. The audio explains the process of tensing muscles in a particular area of the body, and then tells the listener to imagine their stress and finally “let it go” (Romas & Sharma, 2013, pp. 72). For me, this was and still is extremely helpful. It allows me to imagine the stress leaving my body, one small segment at a time. The third and final technique learned during the course was autogenic training.
