Throughout the duration of the service learning experience, conducted observations took place within the third grade classroom of Mrs. Hale at Cumberland Road Elementary. The respectably moderately sized classroom consisted of twenty students. Although the classroom was not substantially dense in population, multiple students did require Individualized Education Programs (IEP). This subgroup of students included three emotional based IEPs. Consequently, the third grass class of Mrs. Hale…
classes parents learn how to create structure and consistency with their child. I would also educate Devon’s parents on the possible causes of ADHD and how Devon is not purposefully ignoring directions out of disobedience, but instead, because her disorder prevents her from being able to function the way she should. I would talk to Devon’s parents about the importance of using things such as calendars and checklist to help Devon stay on task. If Devon’s parents were hesitant about medication I…

Although I had failed to thoroughly look through the DSM-V correctly enough to answer some of these questions in part. I believe it is a predictor of how limited my knowledge in this area really is. After watching the Barkley video and despite all my training thus far, I realize now somewhat disappointedly, that my perceptions of individuals with ADHD might have been far more similar to that of the uneducated person. I have spent so much time and effort understanding autism that I failed to…
This kid was sitting there the whole class trying to figure out this puzzle without moving an inch. This action showed that this kid had a very strong attention span to try and solve the puzzle by himself. Usually kids loose attention on this quite fast unless it is something that really want to pay attention to. It was rare to see a kid stay in one place the entire class while most of the kids were moving around changing activities several times. Secondly, trying to solve the…
For my annotated bibliography, I have chosen the topic of Telecommunication History, more specifically, television. I will be looking at how television has impacted society since its debut in 1927. More specifically, I will be looking at the effect television has had on children. The idea that television may play a role in children’s behaviour is a very controversial topic. There are some key factors that determine whether or not a television program has any effect on children. The first one…
Do you have a child between the ages of two and seventeen that have been diagnosed with ADHD, but aren’t sure if this is truly the issue? Too many medical professionals don’t consider the real or other reasons behind a child’s behavioral issues. Many of them find it easier to prescribe a medication, forcing the child’s behavior to change, making it appear this was the ultimate issue, and see them in six months to a year to make sure their medication is effective. Are we overmedicating children…
characterized by recurring, unwelcome, and disturbing thoughts, and repetitive, ritualistic behaviors that people with this disorder feel the need to perform. They have fears and anxiety that they cannot control. The brain repeats certain thoughts and replays it endlessly. The teenagers with this disorder are usually used to having an everyday routine. Teenagers with obsessive compulsive disorder do not get the help they need because they are too embarrassed to bring it up to anyone. It is the…
I am going to share with you my nephew Nolan. Nolan was my very first nephew. My sister was 18 when she had him, right after her senior year. So, she was young and really had no business having a child. Nolan’s first 3 years of his life, myself and parents were his constant. We played with him, bathe him, fed him, made sure he was read to every night before bed, and most of all loved him. Nolan started preschool and was a little ham. We thought that this was normal for him since he was still…
When observing student A during his literacy lesson rug time instruction, I take note of what is going on before his off-task behavior begins to erupt. The three times student A gears his attention to something else in the classroom is when the teacher is giving directions, while the class is having a discussion, in other words when the teacher asks a question and the kids respond by raising their hand, and finally when the teacher is lecturing or informing the students on a topic. Within those…
