While most of Titian's nudes in his Poesie series serve as idealized, eroticized figures, “The Rape of Europa” serves as a divergent example. Europa is not an idealized, simple, composition and instead complicates the Poesie narrative with her naturalism. I intend to look into the contradictory analysis of this painting and use my own visual analysis of the painting in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum to come to my conclusion. Some of the contradictory elements I have found in this painting…
Theme By Kassie Rain. It's always raining. That's the problem in the story All Summer in a Day by Ray Bradbury. In the setting, Venus, no one ever sees even a glimpse of sunlight. But, finally there is a chance! For the first time in seven years, the rain is going away. Everyone is excited and waiting. Even a frail girl named Margot. Margot is the only kid in her class that knows what the sun looks like. She is the only one that knows what it feels like, what it is like, and her classmates…
Women can be strong and beautiful without having to be sexualized by the media. Should women show a little skin to promote a brand or themselves and their sport? Although this paper is about women and the things they go through to remain thin, I have to say that men have been sexualized as well. Sports players such as Derek Jeter, David Beckam, and Rafael Nadal have all been part of the pretty boys in sports image. With respect to Wimbleton female tennis players have been playing in small…
With in this investigation of the Venus and the Venus figure having the gaze directed at the viewer. This investigation will be looking at how the gaze and the nude female figure have changed over the centuries due to the advancement of women 's place in the world. The woman’s gaze is when the artist puts the characters eyesight directly at the viewer. This is something that is an artist choose to use to make a point to show the viewer that the woman is the desired object but also the one who is…

Citizen: million of invisible or uncomfortably visible people Reading Rankine's Citizen made me feel uncomfortable, and triggered a sense of oppression, hostility, and anger related to the savage labeling of human beings. Our society is built around labels aimed at de-humanizing humans, erasing any trace of individuality by enhancing the apparent duality inherent in the physical. Man/Woman, White/Black, Light/Dark, Good/Bad. Man, white, light, good are all associated with power, either physical…
the biggest difference between cultures is the way they choose to show the subject of the portraits. Venus of Willendorf from Willendorf Austria is an early example of portraiture. At first glance this may not seem like the conventional portrait because it isn’t a realistic depiction of a person. It may be of a specific person but it may also be an idealized rendering of the female body. Venus of Willendorf is a sculpture made of limestone; the fact that it’s a sculpture shows that the curves…
Auguste Rodin once stated, “What is commonly called ugliness in nature, can in art become full beauty”. In Rodin’s sculpture The Kiss, made from 1901 to 1904, he applies his own philosophy to showcase the relationship of Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Ramini from Dante’s Inferno, in the impressionism period. The marble sculpture depicts the two nude, sensually embracing in a corkscrew with their hands all over each other, sitting upon a rough rock-like structure. The sculpture is carved in the…
We as the viewers of art begin at the focal point of the painting Naked Maja, a reclined female nude depiction, oil on canvas created before 1800 (MUSEUM PRADO). It scales at 98 x 191 cm 1800 and was painted by artist Francisco de Goya Y Lucientes from Fuendetodos, Zaragoza and is now in the Museo del Prado in Madrid for public viewing (MUSEUM PRADO). Where the observer's eyes are first drawn when looking upon Naked Maja, is her face, and more distinctly her eye. Mostly due to the tendency of…
represent what a culture or society values in looks and propaganda. One of the first sculptures of the human body found was the Venus of Wilendorf. It was discovered in Austria in 1908 near the village in lower Austria called Krems. The Venus of Wilendorf is an image of a women, its about 4 inches tall with her main features grotesquely larger. There are two attributes to the Venus of Wilendorf that stuck out, her arms are meshed in so much with her big stomach it doesn’t look like she…
