In desperate need of a quarterback and a star, the Atlanta Falcons traded up to the No. 1 pick in the 2001 draft and snatched him up before anyone else could get their hands on him. Vick's reward for turning pro was big a six-year, $62 million contract that included a $15 million signing bonus. Talk about some major cash. He played very little his rookie year, he needed time to learn the ropes and develop. Vick took over Atlanta's starting quarterback job the following season, and lead the Falcons to a winning season, a spot in the playoffs, and also a spot in the pro bowl. Pretty good for the second year quarterback. In 2003 the injury bug hit Michael and shortened his season, Vick and his teammates captured the NFC South crown in 2004, but ended up losing to his future coach Andy Reid and the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship game. Everything seemed to fall in to place for Atlanta. The Falcons were now in the hunt for a super bowl and Vick was the franchise QB the club had been searching for. That season, team officials handed Vick a humongous 10-year, $130 million contract extension But the Super Bowl celebrations never happened. Plagued by poor decision-making, a questionable circle of friends, and arrogance, Vick's life and career started to take a turn for the worse.
