The three forms of skeletons in the animal kingdom are: hydrostatic skeletons, exoskeletons, and endoskeletons. Hydrostatic skeletons are found in cnidarians, worms, and many mollusks. It consists of a fluid filled sac in which the fluid is good support, however, it is formless. Animals with hydrostatic skeletons have two sets of antagonistic muscles (muscles that work in opposition to each other). These muscles are longitudinal muscles and circular muscles, which both help the animal maintain its shape. Exoskeletons are on the outside of bodies of arthropods. They vary in thickness, but are all thin and flexible at the joints to allow the animal to move freely. Endoskeletons are found inside the bodies of humans and other vertebrates. They encase and provide support for internal organs while being under the skin.…

INTRODUCTION In this report, I present a summary of five major arthropod groups. The three groups chosen for this report are Trilobitomorpha, Crustacea and Insecta. Like my previous report, I have organized this report to provide a general summary of these groups, and also to examine a number of fossil specimens belonging to each group. For each group, ten specimens belonging to a specific sub-group (and a specific stratigraphic range when possible) were selected from the GB3D Type Fossils…

Horseshoe crabs are slowly being killed for bait which dramatically lowers the population. Although their population is slowly decreasing, we can still bring it back up because many artificial baits like Eco-Bait can help save these endangered species. Many people believe that interacting with horseshoe crabs will be beneficial to humans and still cause no harm to horseshoe crabs because of the resources they provide such as their chitin. Chitin is found in the shells, or exoskeleton of…

Coelacanths can grow up to 2 m in length. Their bodies are covered in blue scales, which turn brown after death, with a white speckling that is unique to each individual. Their seven fins have fleshy lobes and they move their two paired sets of fins (pectoral and pelvic) in a diagonally synchronous manner like a four-limbed terrestrial animal. Unlike all other vertebrates, coelacanths possess an intracranial joint and an associated basicranial muscle. The purpose of this structure is disputed,…

“Consider the Lobster” boils down to the treatment and sensitivity of lobsters. In August of 2004, a satirical and forthright account of the Maine Lobster Festival (MLF) was published in Gourmet Magazine. At first glance, it is a routine portrayal of the wonders of a popular festival. Upon closer inspection, however, it becomes evident that David Foster Wallace does not sing the festival’s praises or provide insider tips. In spite of his unconventional viewpoint, he does more than delve into the…

Notes: During the large infestation in Michigan in 2007, dogs began vomiting blood and passing whole larvae in their stool after eating these worms. Studies in Europe suggest that N. pronuba females produce a male attracting pheromone. They are also referred to as cutworms because they eat the stems of seedlings, theoretically cutting the plant down. Area Found: This centipede was found crawling on the wall of my basement. Habitat: Originating from the mediterranean region, this arthropod is…

Spiders are the most atrocious creatures on the planet. The amount of times I came face to face with a spider is unbelievable. I swear, my life flashes before my eyes every time. There was one time in particular where I thought I was going to die; I remember it like it was yesterday. I was surrounded by nothing. It smelled like freshly mowed grass and it felt as hot as an oven. It was the summer of 2014 and my best friend, Lauren, had moved in for a few months. Lauren would visit her…
