1. Alcoholics Anonymous Alcoholics Anonymous which is commonly referred to as AA is a fellowship of both men and women whose primary purpose is to help alcoholics to not only stay sober but to also achieve sobriety ("What Is AA?", 2016). It serves the needs of people who have common problems. Members in the groups share their experiences, hope, and strengths with each other in a bid to solve their common problem and to assist each other to recover from alcoholism. AA focuses on a 12-step program…
AA Reaction Paper First off, I have participated in a group session before, so I had an idea of what a group support session would be like, but this AA meeting exceeded my expectations. I was shocked initially when I found out this was an assignment of ours, then I thought this could be interesting. I didn’t have any concerns or reservations about attending the meeting; I just went into it with a clear and open mind. Honestly, I expected to see a lot of disheveled recovering drunks. I…
alcohol. Individuals who are addicted to alcohol feel as though they cannot function every day without it. Those addicted who do not seek help in most cases, hurt themselves, their families and others. This paper aims to prove how Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) support groups can help those individuals who seek help and try to cope with this illness effectively. The purpose of the AA support group meetings are so that those who have the illness of alcoholism can interact with others who are or…
12 Steps in Overeaters For my 12 steps paper I decided to attend an overeaters anonymous meeting in Lowell Massachusetts. The meeting was located in the basement of Lowell’s First United Baptist Church. I called ahead of time to speak with Diane who was the leader for the meeting. I explained that I was a student at William James college and was required to attend a meeting. She was more than happy to let me join the group. To my surprise, there was not too many people that attended the meeting…
Welcome to my humble little blog about a topic that may be made of confusion or controversy. I am here to write about my life and experiences as a follower of Wiccan tradition and the occult. Firstly, I would like to establish that Wiccans are not associated with evil or "black magic". demons, curses, or anything truly evil. Secondly, the title of "Witch" is not gender specific as most would assume. Warlock, by the way, is derogatory to us and as such is not what we use to refer to male witches.…
Last Saturday night, I went to an open Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in Joyful Servant Lutheran Church which is called the KISS fellowship. Each member of the fellowship has the chance to run the meeting, and most of them are alcoholics. It is basically a welcome of newcomers and sharing of personal experience and ideas. The meeting has about 33 people, including visitors and sponsors. Ages vary from young adult to old people, but most are at middle age. Most of them are male. The fellowship sets…
On September 11, Kayla, Taylor and I attended the Parklane Group AA meeting. This meeting was covering chapter eight in the book Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions by Bill W. Before reading chapter eight, the leader of the AA meeting read aloud the rules and upcoming events, he then had us introduce ourselves. I was surprised to see that every time someone wanted to speak they first stated their name and referred to themselves as an alcohol addict. I thought this was only done in movies. However…
When one thinks of an alcoholics anonymous group or any other delinquent sounding organization one might construe the typical junkie persona along with all of the negative connotations that accompany it. For the instance of "The Paragraph Group" at the 13th street clubhouse this is not the case. From young to old and from all walks of life alcoholism had seemed to have plagued more than just this junkie ideology. The meeting in particular that I observed opened with a prayer of serenity. The 12…
It is evident that Alcoholic Anonymous is a support group. According to Forsyth (2014), “A group of people who meet or communicate with one another regularly to help each other cope with or overcome a problem they hold in common” (p. 543). This support group consisted of testimonials, the need for help, have mutual encouragement, and change the member’s social networks (Forsyth, 2014). Everyone in this group from the leader (facilitator) is a recovering alcoholic. I notice that the…
Gender roles can plague everyone. A person could either be (source A). Gender roles can be more constraining for women in modern society because women now have fewer chances to climb higher, women are viewed as objects, and women "must" conform to the gender roles. Women are generalized in a negative way when it comes to jobs. They either "don 't seek high-risk jobs or don 't perform as well at them as men do" or "demonstrate an aversion to risk-taking" (Source F). Because of these and many…
