years” (Document 2, 445). Clements faced trouble during his re-election with unemployment and a collapse in the energy Industry. However, this did not defeat Clements or the Republican Party. After losing his re-election, he ran again and in 1986 and defeated Mark White. During the 1990s, the Republican Party had many victories that lead them to becoming the more dominant party of the Lone Star State. Their first notable victory was when George W. Bush won the election for governor against Ann W. Richards. This was one of the few times in history that the Republican Party had such a strong presence in Texas. Richards was highly liked both those in Texas, but ran a poor campaign that ultimately costed her the position to Bush. Richards was known for receiving the majority of Black and Hispanic votes. However, “Bush got 37 percent of the traditionally Democratic Hispanic vote” in the election (Document 6, 448).
