Sir William Ramsay and Morris Travers founded neon in 1898, by experimenting on liquid air. Prior to discovering neon they had recently found krypton, then later on they would go to discover xenon. “ Ramsay knew that sometimes one element could stay hidden behind another element (Stewart www.chemicool.com/elements/neon.html).” Neon was actually named by Ramsay’s son and was named neon after greek words neos (which means new). After Ramsay and Travers were able to keep finding neon it opened…
This lab was conducted to find the key differences between the quantity of heat (q) and ∆H of a substance. Different masses of substances CaCl2 and NH4NO3 were dissolved in water to see how changing mass impacts the q and ∆H of a substance. When the two substances dissolve, they become ions. CaCl2 dissolves in a reaction of: CaCl2 Ca2+aq + 2Cl1-aq while NH4NO3 dissolve in a reaction of: NH4NO3 NH41+aq + NO31-aq . As shown in these reactions, when ionic compounds dissolve in water, they break…
Methods: To begin, our group acquired three premade vials of .1ml mammal blood with coagulant. We then labeled the vials numbers one, two, and three. In vial number one we added 1 ml of Stock 300 mM NaCl, and no distilled water. This resulted in a NaCl concentration of 1.8 percent. In the second vial we added .5 ml of Stock 300 mM of NaCl, and .5 ml of distilled water. This resulted in a NaCl concentration of .9 percent. In the third vial we did not add any Stock 300 mM of NaCl, and 1 ml…
I decided to pursue this degree because my first chemistry teacher inspired me. She is an amazing woman. Previously she had the job that I would eventually like to have and has a family, productive life, and also able to maintain all of her hobbies. I want to pursue this degree because I want to have a successful life like hers. I also want this degree because I love chemistry I believe that chemistry is my true passion. I have loved chemistry from the moment I started it. I wish to pursue a…
The purpose of the whole lab is to use my knowledge of the periodic table to determine the identity and physical properties of each unknown element. To find the unknown elements we looked at the characteristics of the other elements and grouped the ones that were similar and belonged in the same column. By looking at the characteristics of the unknown elements if it seemed to belong in a group with others with a blank we assumed it belonged there. Mendeleev was a scientist who came up with the…
Goals The goal of the lab was to investigate the properties and structure of an unidentified compound that was discovered in a local landfill. The group was called in to help determine the chemical and physical properties of the compound so we can let the people of the town know so it can be taken care of properly with or without further precautions to be taken. Another goal of this project was to devise the synthesis of the unknown compound. Experimental Design In order to determine the…
chemist from Russia who lived in poverty and was the only one of seventeen siblings to attend school. Mendeleev then created the first periodic table from his finding through periodic law, which he also created. Medeleev was a major contributor to chemistry through the modern…
In order to complete this experiment, students had to provide a great amount of focus and a good understanding of the procedures, which were, along with the materials, very detailed. With this being said, because most of the materials had similar names, it was important for students to not manipulate the lab by mixing up the reagents, which would completely ruin the experiment. The important factors that influenced the success of this experiment included the following: 1) 100% transfer, 2) 100%…
The scientist’s want to see if certain sugars affect the amount of fermentation caused by yeast. The problem statement is; in which of these sugars, monosaccharides, disaccharides, or polysaccharides, will fermentation by yeast occur the best? The independent variable is the variables the scientists can control, so the scientists decided to use certain sugars, such as dextrose, maltose, and lactose being the IVs (Independent variables). The scientist’s Dependent Variable (DV) is the outcome of…
Somewhere in between the years of 460 BC and 370 BC a man named Democritus first introduced the idea of an atom. He was the first person to say that everything is made of atoms. He also said that atoms are indestructible and that the changes we see in substances are just the atoms moving. Democritus said that the shape of the atoms give substances different properties. Democritus’ work, however, did not survive through the Middle Ages. Democritus had no real evidence to prove his theory, but he…
