for two years and returned to Göttingen in 1849. Thirteen years after returning, in 1862, he married Elise Koch and had a daughter. Sadly on July 20, 1866, Bernhard Riemann died of tuberculosis in Selasca, Italy. Before his death, Riemann was able to make great contributions in the field of mathematics. Some of those contributions include Riemannian Geometry, real analysis, and number theory. Riemannian Geometry occurred when Riemann found the correct way to extend into n dimensions or the differential geometry of surfaces. The fundamental object is called the Riemann curvature tensor. Riemann's idea was to introduce a collection of numbers at every point in space which would describe how much it was either bent or curved. In the field of real analysis, he discovered the Riemann integral. Among other things, he showed that every piecewise continuous function is integrable. He also made some famous contributions to modern analytic number theory. In a single short paper, he investigated the zeta function that now bears his name, establishing its importance for understanding the distribution of prime numbers. The Riemann hypothesis was one of a series of conjectures he made about the function's properties. Riemann’s works was influenced by several people. A few of those people include J.P.G.L Dirichlet and Gauss. Dirichlet was Riemann’s teacher and he was the individual who taught Riemann about real analysis. Riemann used the knowledge he gained from Dirichlet to show that…

Large Scale Ambition While Vanguard recognizes the importance of robust analytics, none of the company’s key initiatives have been centered on analytical capabilities. Still, as a largely virtual company (retail clients are rarely given the occasion to meet with representatives face-to-face) the opportunity is obvious. However, Vanguard remains committed to meeting client needs through more traditional means like expanding call centers rather than turning certain business functions over to…

In looking back, from the original patent issued on the tension rod mechanism in the early 1990’s through 1996, it could be argued that the company was resting on its laurels. Functional silos plagued this somewhat small corporation which crippled information flow and visibility. The senior management team were tenured sales folks who were customer facing and only made an appearance when we missed a shipment. The only numbers that were being tracked where dollars shipped and daily attendance…

Wesley place is a skilled nursing facility in Chicago. We received a brief description and history of the facility before speaking with a physical therapist from the facility. This location contracts its physical therapists through an outside company, as does many other skilled nursing facilities like Wesley Place. During our visit, we talked about many of the barriers present at Wesley Place as well as other skilled nursing facilities. A large barrier to care is the shortage of nursing and…

UMPhysicians’ ability to compete on analytics is fairly high among academic healthcare systems. Our ability is directly fed by our position held on these matters – to win out by employing analytics toward an end or two – patient satisfaction, provider satisfaction. Even though our analytical products/tools have been licensed and purchased at rather “vanilla” levels (as described by our COO of Revenue Cycle and others involved in their purchase) our data analysts themselves compensate for any…

“Sophie Germain’s Theorem can be applied for many prime exponents, by producing a valid auxiliary prime, to eliminate the existence of solutions to the Fermat equation involving numbers not divisible by the exponent p” (Laubenbacher and Pengelley, 9). Legendre later used Germain’s findings in a supplement to the second edition of his book, Essai sur le Théorie des Nombres (O’Connor and Robertson). The Institut de France awarded Germain a medal for her work on Fermat’s Last Theorem and Germain…

The verificationist theory of meaning asserts that a statement’s meaning and whether it is meaningful or not lies in its method of confirmation or disconfirmation. This is a compelling, yet inadequate, theory. In this paper I will focus on exploring and explaining how this theory proves problematic. I will claim that this theory is immediately inadequate, since many sentences have no method of verification, based purely on content. If this were the case it would mean that outside of a scientific…
