My media diary test shows me that my media time spending is very diverse. I classified my media usage into three categories, news & social networking, entertainment, and study. For all three type of usages, I calculated the time-use for each type and found out that I am in favor of social media most. During the testing time, I spent 115 minutes media time in day one and 160 minutes in day two. My average time spending for social media is about 135 minutes/day. It shows that I should have enough…
There’s no denying it, social media has taken over our lives. Nowadays it’s impossible to find someone that isn’t connected to facebook or twitter or instagram, etc. Undoubtedly, this has influenced our behaviour drastically, especially for the younger generations. The real question is, are these changes for better, or for worse. The Good Social media allows us to connect with virtually anyone. It “meets our basic need for a sense of belonging” says JoAnne Cantor, Ph.D. “Hearing from our…
In the documentary film, Generation Like, Douglas Rushkoff makes an argument that social media is used to market a person or brand. In Generation Like, a young boy changes his character online to be funnier so people will like him, a young girl…
Identify Target Behavior My social media usage is the behavior that I want to modify. I have noticed that in the past few months I’ve been overusing my social media specially “Snapchat.” I feel like I’m addicted to Snapchat which is a bad thing because it takes away from me a lot of time the I could invest in other productive things. Snapchat has become so addicted in my life that I feel the need to post every little moment of my life on Snapchat, also I’m always distracted on my phone because…

To solve our daunting conundrum, we must look toward the internet and what many contemporaries call “social media.” Our current generation of young and bright minds already strive to create their own little “safe spaces” if you will. These aptly named spaces allow users to share their thoughts among those with similar opinions, creating an “echo chamber” of thoughts (Political Polarity: Does Social Media). But, more importantly, if we were to bolster our efforts in this field, these sanctuaries…
Unfortunately, I do not really use the social media platforms that the author, Steve Rayson, uses to explain his major findings. I am actually very surprised he is tracking his articles across Google + and LinkedIn which are not as popular as other social media. The two tools whose usefulness stands out to me the most are Topsy and Tweriod. Most sites make it easy to track how many times an article has been shared, but these tools bring social sharing into a new light. It is not just about the…
A few years ago, I stumbled upon the poem Look Up. The Author Gary Turk explains that with social media “We edit and exaggerate, crave adulation. We pretend not to notice the social isolation. We put our words into order and turn our lives a-glistening. We don’t even know if anyone is listening!” This poem illuminates many of the challenges that the authors of this week’s readings highlight. Like much that we have studied this course, social media and the internet has both benefits and…
Social media was originally invented to connect the world and provide a platform for people all over the world to communicate their ideas. However, modern times has taken a great turn for social media to even become a place for users to use primarily as a way for news, including fake news. “62% of US adults” use social media as their news outlet, and “44% rely primarily on Facebook”. Considering these data numbers, it becomes apparent to question whether this news channel provides factual…
