    Nitrous oxide was first discovered in 1772 by Joseph Priestley. Nitrous Oxide is a chemical (N2O) (Banks). Nitrous oxide is used in many different ways. The main use I looked into is how drag racers started using systems to inject nitrous into the air-fuel ratio of the engines in their cars. Nitrous Oxide has made great advancements in the world of drag racing and has been very useful in the medical and dental fields. Although Nitrous Oxide has been very useful for many reasons in the world, it also can be very dangerous and can be abused. Nitrous oxide is the cheapest and best way to add huge amounts of horsepower to a car. Nitrous has been the reason many drag racers have sent their cars very fast down the track. (Panure). Like anything Nitrous Oxide has a positive side and a negative side, in this essay I will go into the positive and negative sides of Nitrous oxide. Our understanding of Nitrous Oxide has changed since Joseph Priestley first discovered it in 1772 (Zuck). He thought that all gases were types of air. If the gases couldn't support life he thought that the air was loaded with toxins (Banks). Joseph Priestley's discovery was a big step towards the design of experimental apparatus to collect gas over water (Zuck). At room temperature nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless non-flammable gas. At high temperatures, nitrous oxide is a powerful oxidizer (Zuck).
