    Madagascar has an economy that focuses strongly on their exports. The agriculture is the mainstay of the country, and includes fishing and forestry accounting for more than one-fourth of the GDP and employs roughly 80 percent of the population. The main agricultural products produced in Madagascar include: coffee, vanilla, sugarcane, cloves, cocoa, rice, cassava, beans, bananas, peanuts, and livestock products. The primary source of fuel for Madagascar is the use of firewood which is responsible for deforestation and erosion commonly found in the country. In the mid-1990s Madagascar ditched their socialist economic policies following a World Bank and IMF policy of privatization and liberalization until the the beginning of the political crisis that lasted from 2009-2013. The free market strategy that was adopted placed a slow and steady growth on the economy. Exports on apparel boomed after gaining duty-free access to the US, but the country’s inability to comply to the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) led the country to loss of access on the duty-free access, and the loss of more than 100,000 jobs. Madagascar received new AGOA access in January 2015 following the election of a new democratic president. In November of 2015 the IMF approved Rapid Credit Facility, and a staff monitoring program to Madagascar. The Rapid Credit Facility ultimately helped the government meet the balance of payment needs.
