The Graniteville train crash is one of the most deadly train crashes to occur since the 1970’s. On the evening of January 5th, 2005 a 12-car Norfolk Southern freight train P22 pulled into Avondale Mills textile plant. While doing this, the crew onboard hurriedly had to open a switch to allow their train to get onto a siding before the end of the hour, which they were required to stop working by law. However, the crew of train P22 as it was later found, did not return the switch to its original position. The next day, January 6th, at approximately 2:39 am Norfolk Southern Freight Train 192 collided with Norfolk Southern Train P22 at a speed of about 49 miles per hour (Baum). By the time the crew of train 192 realized what had happened, the collision had become inevitable. The subsequent crash released close to 60 tons of toxic chlorine gas into the area, along with a couple of other less toxic chemicals, which in turn caused the death of nine people, and displaced about 5,400 residents in the immediate area (Dunning and Oswalt). An ethical analysis of this train crash will show that the crew, particularly the conductor and the brakeman, of Norfolk Southern Train P22 was at fault. The crew of Norfolk Southern Train P22 was under an immense time constraint. A report released by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) detailed that the crew was running behind when they arrived at Avondale Mills textile plant at approximately 6:10 pm on January 5th. The crew had to drop…
