    It was raining again. Recently, that is all it ever seemed to do. My dark eyes watched the blanketed sky with mild fascination. The droplets, more fragile than glass, shattered against everything they touched. The rain painted the town of Ashville with hues of gray. In the glass of the window, I could see my own transparent reflection. To the glass, I was just a ghost with a rainy face, though it showed me all that I was. Coal eyes, cotton hair, and snowy skin. My eyes had always reminded me of my mother, and where she came from. I could imagine beautiful women with long dark hair and sun kissed skin, the smell of warm, freshly baked bread, and weaving poinsettias through one's hair. I wished to be more like that. Instead I more resembled my father. I could hardly remember what he looked like though. He was a traveler. Every year he sent me a very special and very expensive trinket from wherever he was visiting. I had five, and the last I received from him was most precious to me. I couldn't think of a time when I didn't have it with me. It was a necklace from Italy with an intricately designed crucifix pendant. It was made of gold with beautiful engraved patterns in it. In the center was a large round ruby. I loved the necklace with all my heart, and it never parted from my neck. It was all that I had to remember my father.
