Putting your loved ones in danger is one of the most selfish and terrifying things that you can do. Whether intentional or not, it is still a scary situation for yourself and the person who could potentially be harmed. If harm is inflicted, the feeling of guilt is inevitable. That gut-wrenching feeling is stuck inside of you, even when everyone tells you that it will be okay. I experienced this about 6 years ago when I was in fourth grade. My youngest brother, Owen, was born when I was in third grade. From the very second I met him, I could tell that he was going to be a high maintenance child. He was always extremely hyper and curious, never a good combination. He wanted to know everything about everything and that often got him into quite a bit of trouble. Sometimes it was just harmless trouble, but other times he ended up with a scraped knee or couple bruises. I will never forget one time in particular when Owen got himself into some serious trouble, and it was partly my fault. One Saturday afternoon, my family was lounging around watching A Series of Unfortunate Events and cleaning the house while I was painting my nails. I remember sitting in a big recliner chair with the open nail polish remover bottle sitting on a table next to me. Owen was running around, touching anything that he could get his hands on. I can still picture what happened in those next few seconds as clearly as the day it happened. As I focused on painting my index fingernail, I saw Owen’s tiny…

Hydrocarbons include the chemicals methylene chloride and chloroform which are commonly found in paint thinners and degreasers. These chemicals are easily absorbed through the mucosal layers of the respiratory tract leading to direct effect on the lung parenchyma. Direct contact with alveolar membranes through inhalation can cause inflammation and bronchospasms and eventually lead to poor oxygen carrying capacity resulting in hypoxia. Another characteristic of these chemicals is the ability to…

After starting with 30 mL of an unknown mixture of two solvents, fractional distillation and gas chromatography were used to identify the unknowns as acetone and toluene in a 1 to 2.04 ratio of acetone to toluene. Fractional distillation was first used to separate the unknown mixture into its components based on boiling point. Distillation refers to the method of separating components of a mixture through heating and cooling. Simple distillation, which is especially useful in the separation…

瀀瀀ract The purpose of Isolation of Bixin from Annatto Seeds using Column Chromatography was to separate and purify macroscopic amounts of pure bixin compound from annatto seed ex-tract.1 A mixture of bixin, methylbixin, and norbixin were extracted from annatto seeds. Bixin was then isolated from the mixture through the use of the column chromatography technique. The isolated bixin was characterized through Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) analysis, which displayed an Rf value of 0.317, which…

The separation of mixtures to obtain pure products is done through a technique called distillation. This lab looks at two different distillation techniques, simple and fractional. Acetone and butanone were mixed together and then put through the distillation process in order to obtain each as a pure substance. These substances were boiled into vials that gave us fractions #1-4. Fraction #1 was obtained through simple distillation and fractions #2-4 were obtained through fractional distillation.…

This experiment was conducted to determine the molecular weight of acetone and an unknown volatile liquid by using the Dumas Method. Three trials are conducted for each volatile liquid. The molecular weight of the acetone and the unknown volatile liquid was determined by first taking 2mL of acetone and the unknown volatile liquid in a Erlenmeyer flask and heating it to the point where all the of the liquid is completely vaporized. The temperature is measured using a temperature probe from the…

Cl- has the common ion sources of HCl and CaCl2 in test tubes C and D. Le Chatelier’s Principle explains that adding Cl- as a reactant will shift the equilibrium to the right to produce more product from the added reactant in test tubes C and D. When adding acetone to test tube E, it changed the solution from pink to blue because CoCl42- was formed on the product side, producing a right shift. Le Chatelier’s Principle states that the removing of water, because of the acetone, will cause the…
