others) should encourage students to focus on what he or she will enjoy studying rather than inquiring about what jobs are allegedly available for different academic concentrations. Keyes suggests that everyone should stop asking others “what is your major”; through personal examples Keyes is able to convey his argument. Keyes claims that choosing a major in college “is one of the most difficult things students face in college” and that there are two major factors taken into consideration when doing so. Firstly, is the desire a student has to study what actually interests them. I believe this to be true; there is no point in spending a great amount of money on college when the concentration chosen is unbearable to finish. Secondly, is the factor of graduating and not making any income, thus forcing the graduate to move back in with mom and dad. Keyes also claims that students should actually be encouraged to focus on what he or she will enjoy studying the most. There are three reasons supporting this claim, with the first being psychological. He mentions his friend Jesse. Jesse was a pre-med student for his first two years in college to appease his father. He hated it; he had no true passion for the subject, his grades were dropping (and effecting his chances with medical school), and his overall reasoning (money) for this academic focus suffered. The second reason to not ask this question is that is implies that certain majors do not prepare students for the workforce. He…

My experience in the emergency department at Legacy Salmon Creek during my paramedic education gave me insight to the patients I hope to eventually serve. During this experience, I got the opportunity to help patients suffering from life-threatening illnesses. However, the majority of the patients I worked with did not have emergent conditions. I realized that many patients visited the emergency department because they did not have access to affordable health insurance for preventative care.…

While the modern social and economic conditions have been changing fast in the past two decades, many retailing companies seem to be struggling to keep up with all these changes. Of course, Sears is not an exception. For instance, the development of e-commerce, the expansion of international trade, and the changes in the demographics and consumer’s taste have shrunk Sears’ market share to the extent that many consumers cannot recall their last Sears' visits. Having a well-established board…

reveal that a lack of training contributed to the events leading to the responder’s death. One of the biggest adjustments the fire service had to make in the last decade was implementation of the Incident Management System. Failure to implement and train to industry standards can be very costly to both the organization as well as all that are involved. An example of this is the tragic loss of 9 Charleston, S.C. firefighters whose lives were lost in a structure fire in 2007. The Center for…

Wal-mart is a large big box retail store that sells a wide variety of products. In the past, Wal-mart has done some dishonest things, “A New York times story alleged that Wal-mart bribed officials in Mexico to allow the company to open stores in Mexico” (Mielach 3). Also that is not all that has been learned about Wal-mart, notice that in general, “The only studies that support Big Wally are funded by or through Wal-mart” (Barrison 3). That is just a bit suspicious is it not? However, the…

Gender bias and sexual harassment has been a major issue with females joining the fire service. Females have been verbally abused, sexually abused, and worse yet even raped. A lot of times, their complaints went unheard or the women were too afraid to tell anyone. Recently in the Tri-City Herald, it discussed that a “female Kennewick firefighter filed…

Emergency departments provide twenty-four hour care for life threatening, chronic and acute conditions. However, the increase utilization of emergency departments lead to overcrowding and an increase in the number of individuals that leave without being seen (LWBS) by a physician. “According to a Center for Disease Control and Prevention report on ED use in the United States in 2000, at least 1.8 million patients left emergency departments without being seen” (Johnson et al., 2009). This is a…
