FAO further gave more specification to try and ensure that only gum from A. Senegal and closely related species such as Vachellia (Acacia) Seyal. According to the Centre of Agriculture and Biosciences International Invasive species compendium, gum Arabic was initially collected from the Acacia nilotica which was referred to as “Gum arabic tree” whereas in the present day gum Arabic is usually collected from two related species mentioned above A. Senegal and A. Seyal (Baldwin, 1999). These two species and many Acacia species are indigenous to the Sahelian region of Africa and for which Sudan is the leading producer (Gashua et al., 2015). They are also indigenous to many west African and sub-Saharan African countries such as Nigeria, Niger, Uganda, Mauritania and Chad.
