He had two older sisters, Esther and Beth, however John also had a younger sister named Mary. At the age of fourteen, Steinbeck was unambiguous about wanting to be a writer. [1] He would often sit in his room and write poems and short stories. Later in his life he would write about his childhood and how it was being a young fellow at his time. After high school with the initiative of pleasing his parents in mind, Steinbeck enrolled at Stanford University in 1919.
