David and Bill the soda shop owner took it upon themselves to actively rebel in the pursuit of happiness and freedom for the people, through expression of art. Social changes weren't the only changes that happened in Pleasantville; some of the biggest changes were of nature and new knowledge. As soon as Betty entered the water and bush started burning, the audience is prompted to immediately think of biblical implications; such as God and the burning bush. In the Bible, Moses was appointed by the bush to lead the Israelites. This correlates to the movie in the sense that David was to lead to people of Pleasantville out of Plato’s figurative cave of ignorance; thus being their transition from black and white to color. Another important period in the movie, is when the rain starts. This can be alluded to being baptized, and new beginnings for those touched by the water and foreshadowing huge changes to come. The Mayor of Pleasantville is a stark reminder of people who don't like change- almost like the Cambodian leader Khmer Rouge, who killed people that wore glasses; due to him believing that they were intellects out to change traditional Cambodian ways. In the first scene, the barbaric brutality is masked with the security of standard black and white images. These challenges the audience to question the essence and…
