Claudette’s ultimate goal was to become a functioning member of human society, able to work and interact within the human culture. Throughout the rehabilitation process, she managed, for the most part, to keep up with the ideal levels of humanity outlined in The Jesuit Handbook on Lycanthropic Culture Shock. Since she graduated from St. Lucy’s (Russell, 251), she must have met the expectations for essential human action and interaction, allowing her to function within human society. However,…
Access to clean water is a novelty the United States takes for granted. Without water at our fingertips, how would society differ? Could inadequate water supply and water quality lead an economically thriving society into poverty? Insufficient water supply and water quality threaten the lives of over 2.6 billion people (Benjelloun and Tarrass 240). Many know water’s importance, but do they know the effects regarding the lack of clean water? Deficient water supply and water quality leads to…
disgust over viral videos about Planned Parenthood. These videos show a doctor talking about harvesting tissue from aborted fetuses. On September 18, 2015, Republican leaders pushed a bill that would end federal funding of Planned Parenthood by a 241-187 vote. The House has also approved a bill…
Reading Response 3-30 Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky was the most challenging book that I have read this year, prose-wise. Dostoevsky tends to go on at great length with his descriptions of Raskolnikov’s thought processes, which tends to lead to great blocks of text that can wear on the eyes after too long. However, I didn’t find the book boring - it was simply laborious to read and had a tone that was a little too nihilistic for me to really be able to get into it. I found that I…
“The Trumpeter” The Dying Gaul, an ancient Roman copy of a lost bronze statue from the Hellenistic Period, is found today in the Capitoline Museum. The Dying Gaul, a statue made out of marble, measuring three feet and six inches high and approximately six feet and seven inches in length, lies on an oval shield with a trumpet near his right hand. Portraying a realism form of art, the off-white statue portrays the man in different axis points. The legs are at a profile with the upper body at a…
bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back” (241). This quote can be applied to many situations through history, but specifically to the Holocaust. Many times in history, society was made to believe that their practices or situations were morally right, but it was eventually realized that these…
In the novel The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, we learn about the main character Tom and his family who undergo many hardships on their way to California. However in the memoir Black Boy by Richard Wright we see that the main character Richard experiences the same encounter, but through which he and his family go through more violence, and hunger than shown in The Grapes of Wrath. Though Tom and Richard’s life are similar in many ways they are both very different too. Each author Steinbeck…
the cold and passes out on the streets. Marjane says, “I woke up in a hospital. It was a miracle. If I had fainted during the night, no one would have noticed and the glacial cold would surely have prevented me from fulfilling my destiny” (Satrapi 241). Marjane is in a place of regret at this time, and she does not know how to cope with the loss of her boyfriend. She understands the consequences of her actions after her near-death experience, and decides to improve her physical health. During…
Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America and various selections in Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Antislavery Writings (specifically, his “Address on the Emancipation of the Negroes in the British West Indies,” “The Fugitive Slave Law,” “The President’s Proclamation,” his “Lecture on Slavery,” and lastly his “Address to the Citizens of Concord on the Fugitive Slave Law”) discuss the deleterious effects of conformity on the American mind, and on society as a whole. Both authors discuss the…
This film is controversial with its direct conflict with the massive narrative of the kind male guerillas. There are scenes depicting rape, inequality to women and how the women comrades had to demand to learn to protect themselves (Barnes, 2006; 241). Flame confronts the way men treated women during and after the war. The film, Flame, directly contradicts the “classic nationalist…
