I received an email on my phone notifying me stating that I owe Shippensburg University an amount of four hundred dollars for tuition. Furthermore, I need another three hundred for books, plus another two hundred to place a deposit for a dorm next semester. As I was telling her this expensive statement, she turns around and says, “I’ll take care of it.” This was the one of the few experiences that I went through with my mother during this previous winter break. In summary, I experienced her…
Did your life force you to grow up? I remember being 4 years old and praying to god that I get older faster. I always wanted money in my wallet like my dad, so I can buy my own candy. I recall crying at the age of 8 because my mom said I was not old enough to wear her red lipstick. At that moment, all I wanted was to be tall, big and grown so that I could make my own choices and live life my way. My wishes did come true, but it is like the wish granted by a bad genie, he tricked me. The universe…
The next morning Marisol showed up with dark smudges under her eyes and sort of listless. On her back was a small, floral backpack, with the tiny lizard gargoyle perched on it. Everything about the gargoyle was distinctly female—the rounded face, the dark lining around her almond shaped eyes, the dainty nose, the long, elegant tapering tale and the delicate point to her ears. Even the fine lines of her skin were more flowing and organic rather than scaly. “Jamie, Hawking,” Marisol said once…
Lailah knows she is not like the others. She doesn’t age and has no family. She has visions of things she has lived before in past lives. She has no clue of what she is or who she is. Walking home from work one late night she discovered an injured person. His name is Jonah. She decides to help him out a little. When she brings him back to her place…
Perseverance is “continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition,” according to Merriam-Webster: Dictionary and Thesaurus. Many characters in this book persevere as they try to figure out how to deal with what life throws at them. In the novel Trouble, the main character, Henry, has his older brother hit and killed by Chay in an accident. Chay is a Cambodian immigrant who attends Henry’s school, and gets bullied because of his cultural differences.…
Not everybody will like you—it’s a statement I've always heard, understood and accepted. What I didn't realized until fairly recently in my life, is that some people take this to the next level. Some people will hate you for reasons seemingly unknown or unreasonable to you. It all started with the rehearsals of the 2015 school spring musical of The Addams Family that my friend, we'll just refer to him as Pugsley, myself and a couple other friends, were met with the presence of a then junior,…
Her blood runs ice-cold as the slam of the front door shakes the delicate frame of the house and threatens to bring it crumbling down . NO, NO, NO. He is home. He is a monster. He is her “guardian.” You feel the child tremble underneath the thin sheer cloth that covers her body. Why her? Why does this have to happen to her? “ONE, TWO, THREE.” You hear her begin the breathing exercises she taught herself when she was still learning how to read. “ONE,TWO,THREE.” It’s not working, her breathing is…
Within the last year or so, my mom has been diagnosed with a leakage in her eyes that is causing her to go blind. Currently she is getting shots in her eyes to help stop the leakage, but it is not working. There have been many obstacles that both of us have faced. With her losing her sight, it has of course become harder for her to work both her jobs. Most of the time I have to read for her because the print is too small, and drive long distances so it doesn’t bother her eyes. Addition to…
You know when you think about dangerous things in life and how rare it is to experience it? The event that i am going to share is important because you should protect yourself and anyone around you and just when you think something can’t possibly happen, it will. To begin this story, it was the 2nd week of freshman year of Firestone High School . Kiara (my friend) and i had just left school, and were heading to her house to chill. We were walking down the sidewalk and everything seemed fine. As…
