It is based on the murders committed by Ivan Milat with that scene in particular being inspired by the paralysing spinal wounds that each of his victims were found with. Milat is serving 7 consecutive life sentences at the Goulbourn Supermax prison, for the torture and murder of 7 backpackers found in the Belangalo state forest between 1992 and 1993. Since Milat went to prison he hasn’t been any better behaved.
