“Don’t judge a book by it’s cover!” Since we were old enough to read books, my teachers have preached this mantra to my classes. They would tell us that it is what is on the inside that matters, not just the cover. I must have heard these exact words hundreds of times while in school, yet I still found myself breaking this unwritten rule when I was in the eleventh grade. It was just another cold winter day in rural Minnesota when I entered my language arts class in the morning. Being that it was the first class of my day, the sun had yet to rise, which added to the overall tired mood that every student conveyed. As for the students, we projected our worn out mood by wearing sweatpants and sweatshirts. Thus, it was a typical, dreary day in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota. When I entered the classroom, I made my way to my usual desk by the window and immediately sitting down, joining in the silence with my classmates. Despite the fact that it was colder near the window, I always chose to sit there so I could watch the snowflakes falling from the sky to the ground or the dogs running through the field, that was directly outside the window, whenever I was bored. On this particular day, I was watching a man walking his dog when my best friend, Brooke, came into the classroom and claimed the spot next to me. Brooke is like me. The both of us…

What do you know now about yourself that you did not know at the beginning of the course? (This is about you, not leadership concepts.) When I started this course I was very nervous about how I would do in the open class environment that we have. After the first class I went home and strongly debated about dropping this class for one that does not require so much talking. I generally am a person that avoids talking in front of large groups, even answering questions in class makes me nervous.…

The air in the room was stale and the draught from the open door sent particles of dust spinning in the light from the window. Alex lay on his back on the bed, his hands folded on his chest, his profile austere and saintly. ‘Is he ok?’ Mike had hardly spoken on the walk to Hilda’s building; he seemed deflated. He and Sadie were still at breakfast when they arrived, and she and Gary had by stood by awkwardly as Mike drained his coffee and put down his cup before shrugging on his jacket. Sadie…

When Henrietta Lacks was in surgery before her death in 1951, doctors removed cells, now known as HeLa Cells, without any knowledge or Henrietta or her family to conduct research her disease. During the time of these actions, there were no HIPPA laws or Privacy Acts that prevented the doctors from inputting Henrietta’s medical records in an unprotected database. However, when the Lacks family became aware of the HeLa cells, they raised concerns to NIH of the privacy rights. About three years…

Do Americans Really Have True Privacy "History has shown us that sacrificing our right to privacy can have dire consequences -- we still live in a world where all people are not treated equally. Too many people do not feel free to practice their religion or express their opinion, or love who they choose," (Peterson) In the fourth amendment it states that the American people have the right to privacy. This is not well enforced and this right is often overlooked. Even on the internet the privacy…

The Privacy Act was passed in 1974 and finally became effective on September 25 of 1975. This Act was mainly passed because of an outgrowth of Watergate reforms and also because of the rapid growth of technology such as computers. The main thing that this Act is known for is that it restricts the disclosure of personal records, much opposite of what the Freedom of Information Act does. “The purpose of the Privacy Act is to balance the government’s need to maintain information about individuals…
