    Where do you take place in society? What does that place mean to you? The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton makes you wonder how your place would change if you were in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1965. Would you be considered a low class, poor greaser? Or would you be a wealthy, living the high life Social? No matter how you answered those questions, you should read The Outsiders. The narrator of this book is a fourteen year old boy names Ponyboy Curtis. Yes, that is, in fact, his real name. One of his brothers is named Sodapop Curtis, and the other is named Darrel Curtis, but he goes by Darry. Darry is the oldest, and therefore takes care of his brothers since their parents died in a car crash. All three Curtis brothers are in a gang of greasers that also include Steve Randal, Two-Bit Mathews, Dallas Winston, and Johnny Cade. Two-Bit is a nickname for Keith Mathews, and Dally - not to be confused with Darry - is the nickname given to Dallas Winston. There is also a Soc girl named Sherri Valance who goes by the nickname Cherry. These boys live in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the year of 1965. This is because S. E. Hinton wrote The Outsiders while living in Tulsa. The Outsiders starts with Ponyboy leaving a movie theater alone. Since he’s a greaser, a groups of Socs, short for Socials, attack him. He is rescued by his gang, and soon enough Pony, Dally, and Johnny go to a drive-in theater together, they meet Cherry and her friend Marcia, and Two-Bit meets them there.
