RIS is new tech introduced with Win 2000 allowing remote installation. RIS server installs XP Pro on RIS clients that have a Pre-Boot Execution Enviornment (PXE) network card or use a RIS boot disk generated w/ rbfg.exe. RIS is a good choice for automatic deployment of large numbers of PXE compliant clients.

|
Yes. The reference computer is booted to an image boot disk. The image is labeled and uploaded to a remote server. You boot the computer w/ the image boot disk and download the selected image from a menu when the image is required.

|
Use System Preparation Tool (Sysprep) utility to prepare the computer prior to imaging using third party image software or using the prepared computers hard drive with the disk duplicator hardware. Then remove the drive w/ the image and insert it in disk duplicator to copy the image.

Remote installation folder must be NTFS version 5 or later; You need to configure RIS server through the RISETUP command; The DHCP server must be authorized thru the Active Directory.

|
Unattended installation works well for a large number of clients and the computers are not PXE compliant. Use a distribution server to install XP Pro on target computers or use an XP Pro CD with an answer file on floppy.
