The Issue

East Timor illegally invaded 1974 by Indonesia, committing mass atrocities against the East Timorise. More than 100,000 people died. The International community saw this as an act of agression and therefore against the UN Charter

The UN's Role

Took 25 years to take action but was powerful/successful. UN Security council's diplomatic pressure was crucial in getting the Indonesian gov to back down. UNAMET (The United Nations mission in East Timor) authorised deployment of 280 civillian police who attempted to keep the situation under control - very weak - police officers unarmed/Indonesian gov able to use state soverignty to prevent them from taking action.

INTERFRET's Role

More successful - led by Australia - sent peacekeepers into East Timor and engaged in tense negotiations with the Indonesian gov who left eventually as a result of their words/actions.

Australian Federal Government's Role

Provided military assistance, funded effort during event and in aftermath

Role of the Media

Media coverage of violence allowed the world to see what atrocities were occuring there and put added pressure on the Indonesian gov to leave.

Role of the ICG

Released reports regarding East Timor's future health/security
