1. Babylonian Captivity

Period of papal history when the headquarters were moved from Rome to Avignon. Named after period of Hebrew exile.

was a member of the clery and a teacher at Oxford who attacked the wealth of the church and morality among the clergy. Promoted the first translation of the bible from Latin to English which allowed people to interpret scripture on their own.

2. Jan Hus

Influenced by John Wycliffe, a rector at the University of Prague denocuced abuses of church and was excommunicated. He was convicted and burned at the stake

3. Avignon

The French moved the headquarters here. City in Southern France that was the seat of the Roman Catholic Church in 1300 Remaind capital for nearly 70 years.

3. Prague

Capital of the former Czehoshoslovakia, now the capital of Chez Republic.

4. What caused the decline of the church's temporal power after the reign of Innocent III?

The decline was caused because the importance of townspeople grew and they often felt that the restriction of church laws hindered trade and industry, secondly a spirit of questions and skeptics began to develop because the Muslims and the pagan Greeks apprised in Europe and much of their thoughts conflicted with the church.
