BAROMETRIC PRESSURE
A measure of the force of air pushing down on Earth's surface.
BAROMETER
An instrument used to measure air pressure.
HIGH
A large amount of air pushing down. Does not allow clouds to form. Usually associated with clear and sunny weather.
LOW
A smaller amount of air pushing down. Low pressure allows clouds to form. Usually associated with cloudy and rainy weather.
WIND
The movement of air from an area of high pressure to and area of low pressure. Can also be created when warm air rises.
JET STREAM
High altitude of streams of fast moving wind. It blows from west to east. Is responsible for the movement of major weather systems from west to east on all parts of the Earth.
ANEMOMETER
An instrument that measures wind speed.
WIND VANE
An instrument that indicated wind direction.
AIR MASS
A large body of air that has the same temperature and humidity throughout. There are 4 types: cold/dry, cold/moist, warm/dry, and warm/moist.
FRONT
A boundary that forms when two air masses with different properties meet.
WARM FRONT
A front that brings warmer temperatures. As it passes over it may bring
gentle showers
all day precipitation
COLD FRONT
A front that brings colder temperatures. As it passes over it may bring
strong storms
short periods of precipitation
STATIONARY FRONT
A boundary between warm and cold air masses where no movement occurs for several days.
HUMIDITY
A percent that states how much moisture is in the air, compared to much moisture the air could hold at that temperature.
HYDROMETER
An instrument used to measure humidity
THERMOMETER
An instrument used to measure air temperature.
RAIN GAUGE
An instrument used to measure the amount of precipitation.
