The Five Goal Setting Principles

(1) Clarity, (2) Difficulty, (3) Commitment, (4) Feedback, and (5) Task Complexity

Clarity of Goals

Should be specific, clear, and concise. Should be quantifiable and measurable. Goal should not be abstract.

Challenge of Goals

Goals should be not too easy but also not too difficult — should be hard enough that we are able to put in effort.

Commitment to Goals

Should have a higher level of commitment to achieve success. Can be shown through actions; Recognition of the goal as something one should do and recognition that it is something able to be done.

Feedback for Goals

Should be considered and one should be open. Gives the person accountability. Should also be specific.

Task Complexity of Goals

Must be achievable. Must be well laid out.

Three Blocks to Goal Achievement

(1) Irrationality, (2) Unwillingness, and (3) Fear.

Irrationality

Thoughts do not match with reality. Goal manifests itself as only wishful thinking because proper planning was not made.

Unwillingness

Making no effort into achieving the goal whatsoever.

Fear.

Being cowered into submission and letting it take over our circumstances.

Of all these principles related to setting goals, it is important that...?

One should not easily give up!
